Hepatitis B

Disease Overview
Hepatitis B is one of six known hepatitis viruses. Hepatitis B is a virus that attacks the liver. In some cases the virus will last less than six months and the liver will heal itself. In other cases the infection will become severe causing liver damage or failure.

Causes of Hepatitis B
Hepatitis B is a transmitted disease. The infection can be transmitted through:
  1. Sexual Transmission.
  2. Transmission through needle sharing.
  3. Accidental needle sticks.
  4. Transmission from mother to child.
Symptoms of Hepatitis B
Hepatitis B symptoms can range from mild to severe depending on the infection. If infected you may have one or all of the following symptoms:
  1. Nausea and vomiting.
  2. Loss of appetite.
  3. Dark Urine.
  4. Yellowing of your skin and the whites of your eyes.
  5. Joint pain.
  6. Pain in your abdomen near your liver.
  7. Fatigue.
Treatment of Hepatitis B
Treating Hepatitis B within the first 24 hours of being infected is essential. Vaccines are available and if received within 24 hours it may protect you from the virus. Once Hepatitis B becomes chronic doctors usually monitor and treat with drugs. If the liver becomes severely damaged a liver transplant may be required.
